Elementary Linear Algebra

Written by: Keith Matthews (University of Queensland)

Among the many educators trying to explain why their textbook is new and different, here we have one saying that is text possesses a style “somewhat formal and terse.” But, then he describes one of the sections of the text as a “gentle introduction to the second course.”

Keith Matthews is an Honorary Research Consultant in the School of Mathematics and Physics at the University of Queensland. On his Number Theory website, he offers his elementary linear algebra textbook. It is based upon many years of lectures and includes problems with their solutions. There are no listed pre-requisites but a quick glance at the first chapter makes it clear that students will need some advanced mathematics in their repertoire. Matthews does, however, provide an answer key to the chapter problems which makes this text suitable for some level of self-study.

It appears that students should be prepared to use the CMAT exact arithmetic matrix calculator program which is available via Matthews’ website.
